The creation of a new breed of pigs was multi-stage. After the release of the government decree on increasing the productivity of commercial pig breeding, a working group was formed on the basis of the Poltava Institute named after A.V. Kvasnitsky UAAS, headed by Academician V.P. Rybalko.

The research team was assigned the following tasks:

  • create an early maturing boar to cover sows of local breeds and crosses,
  • increase the survival rate and vitality of young animals,
  • to increase the resistance of pigs to diseases and infections,
  • improve the quality of pork meat and bring it in line with existing standards.

To obtain the maternal line, individuals of a large white pig and representatives of the Poltava meat breed were used. The next stage of work took place on the basis of the collective farm named after the newspaper "Youth of Ukraine" (Cherkasy region) and farms of the Stavropol Territory of the Russian Federation. Here a paternal line was formed for further breeding. Representatives of foreign breeds of meat pigs (Landrace, Duroc, Hampshire) participated in its creation.

In 2001, elite individuals of the newly bred breed were delivered from Vinnitsa and Nikolaev regions of Ukraine to the breeding farm of Freedom Farm International LLC (Kherson region). An in-depth selection work was carried out here, as a result of which the fattening qualities improved and the maturation of pigs was reduced. A total of five genealogical lines are mixed in the new breed.... In 2007, a red white-belted pig breed was officially registered in the State Security Service of Ukraine.

Standards

The pigs of the new breed are of the meat type. They are early maturing and already at the age of 176 days reach marketable indicators. Often boars of the red white-belted are used as producers. The resulting litter, regardless of the type and breed of the sow, demonstrates a higher (by 2-3%) meat yield. In this case, the new quality can be transmitted and inherited.

Pigs have a calm and friendly nature. They live in pairs, when they are kept alone, they begin to yearn: they lose their appetite and interest in walking, they are very reluctant to make contact with people.

Constitution

All individuals have a large body and a powerful constitution. A distinctive feature of pigs is a wide white stripe covering the area of the shoulder blades, and sometimes the chest and forelimbs. The back is straight. The small and light head is elongated and ends in a blunt snout. Medium-sized protruding ears sometimes droop slightly in front. Pigs have a wonderful conformation, smooth skin covered with thin and even bristles. The legs are long and strong.

Color, weight and size

Pigs of the red belt breed are dark brown in color and a stripe of white.

Fertility

A sow of red white-belted breed leads 10-11 piglets in one litter. They are distinguished by great vitality and quickly gain weight while milk-fed. Sow milk yield 55.5 kg. From 5 days of age, newborns begin to feed, which allows them to accustom their stomachs to coarse food and take them away from the sow earlier.

At 1.5-2 months of age, the weight of the nest approaches 166 kg, and the piglets are transferred to self-feeding. By 8 months, the piglet weighs 100 kg, he is ready for mating and bearing offspring.

If a boar of a red white-belted breed covers a sow of another breed, then its fertility increases by 0.3-0.5 piglets. At the same time, the maturation period of milk-fed young animals is reduced by 15-18 days. And when piglets are transferred to roughage, the number of feed units required for weight gain decreases.

Newborn piglets are inactive and the sow can transmit them. To avoid this, the young are kept in a separate pen. And for the safety of the suckers, they arrange a wooden or metal partition with a height of 15-20 cm.

The health and vitality of young animals is assessed according to the following criteria:

  • degree of activity, great mobility, easy and quick rise on the legs,
  • cleanliness of the skin. The presence of ulcers may indicate lowered immunity,
  • cleanliness of the back of the torso and anus. Feces adhering to them indicate digestive problems,
  • the piglet's good appetite will promote rapid weight gain.

Productivity

With one pork carcass, you can get up to 62.1% of lean meat with a small fat layer. The thickness of the fat at the level of the upper thoracic vertebrae is small - up to 25.1 mm. In some cases (keeping pigs on a special diet) it is possible to achieve its reduction to 5-10 mm, which has a positive effect on the commercial qualities of meat. The mass of a tender ham is 11.5 kg, and the area of the muscle "eye" is 32.1 cm².

As a result of backcrossing, the meat qualities of the red white-belted breed were improved. At the same time, the pigs were inseminated with the sperm of boars of specialized meat breeds of foreign selection. In animals, the area of the muscle "eye" has increased (up to 60 cm² and more), the fullness of the hams and the size of the body... Some representatives of the red white-belted breed of pigs at the age of 12 months weighed up to 225 kg.

Features of the content

Pigs of the red white-belted breed do not require special conditions for keeping. Strong and harmonious constitution makes it easy to adapt to any conditions. For normal development, animals do not need a place for walking or grazing. The territory of the yard will be enough for walking.

However, when setting up a stall, several conditions must be met. To keep the boar, a space of 3 m² is sufficient, and the sow will need 5 m². Pigs of the red white-belted breed are clean animals. They do not tolerate dirt and high humidity in the barn; there should always be dry straw under them. When setting up a pig pen, it is best to cover the concrete floor with a slightly sloped wooden deck. The walls should also be upholstered with wood panels to a height of 15-20 cm.

Animals catch colds easily, so there should be no drafts in the barn when ventilation and window openings are arranged. Colds are easily transmitted by airborne droplets or through feces from adult pigs to young animals, and can be fatal (20-60% of droppings). To prevent the disease, the temperature in the pigsty should be kept at least + 18-20 ° C, although pigs of this breed can withstand lower values (up to +5 ° C).

Food ration

Fast weight gain is one of the significant advantages of this breed.... Under normal conditions, 3.4 feed units are required to obtain 1 kg of live weight. In private and collective farms, the following technologies are used for effective feeding of pigs of the red white-belted breed:

  1. Traditional (juicy green food, crushed cereals and legumes, root crops, dairy waste, nutritional yeast). Mainly boiled mash with the addition of kitchen waste and meat and bone meal. Raw roots are not often included in the diet. They, like succulent feed, play the role of vitamin supplements.
  2. Modern: feeding pigs with factory-made dry compound feed and cake with the addition of complex bio-additives, meat or fish meal. Pigs require a lot of fresh water with this diet..

Good muscle growth and function are important for producing tender and high quality meat. This is ensured by the presence in the diet of a sufficient amount of proteins and amino acids.

Oats and corn should be excluded from the diet of red white-belted pigs. These crops lead to intense fat production. Products containing large amounts of vegetable oils (soybeans, vinasse) and waste from the fishing industry give the meat a specific unpleasant aftertaste.

Breeding areas

Pigs of the red white-belted breed well tolerate various climatic conditions. They easily acclimatize and develop normally in many regions of Ukraine and Russia. Currently, pigs of this breed are successfully bred on the basis of seven pedigree reproducers and five breeding farms in the south of Ukraine, in Chernigov, Chernovetsk regions, in Stavropol and Krasnodar regions of the Russian Federation.
