Taxonomic status:

View status: full species

This taxon is a subspecies of Threskiornis [aethiopicus, melanocephalus or molucca] (sensu lato) by some authors

Ⓘ Black-headed ibis

The black-headed ibis is approximately 50 to 90 cm long, the males are slightly larger than the females. The beak is long, thin and bent downward. The plumage is completely white. The front of the neck, as well as the head, do not have feathers; black skin is visible in these places. Both sexes have the same plumage color.

1. Distribution

The black-headed ibis is widespread in India, Pakistan, Burma and Thailand; it has been known to fly to southern Primorye. His closest relatives are the sacred and Moluccan ibis. Birds live mainly near water bodies.

2. Reproduction

The black-headed ibis nests in colonies, partly with other ibis species. The nest is on the ground, in the undergrowth or in trees. The female lays 2 to 4 eggs, which hatch for about 21 days. When feeding, the chick repeatedly grabs the beak of the parent bird with its beak, after which it regurgitates the content of the pharynx to the chick. Young birds become independent in about 5 to 6 weeks.

3. Nutrition

With its long beak, the black-headed ibis digs in the ground or sedimentary rock in search of insects, crayfish and other small animals. On occasion, small rodents or reptiles can also become its prey.
