Red-billed alcyone, red-nosed or white-breasted kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis) widespread in Asia from Turkey and India to the Philippine Islands. It reaches a length of 26-39 cm, its back, tail and wings are bright blue. Shoulders and sides, head and lower abdomen are chestnut brown. The throat and chest are white. Beak and legs are coral red.

Lifestyle and reproduction

Red-billed alcyone not as strongly attached to water as other kingfisher species. It nests in dry cultural landscapes, in palm groves, parks and sometimes in forest glades, but still most often on steep banks near water. For the nest, it digs holes up to 50 cm long. There are 4-7 round white eggs in a clutch.

The red-billed alcyone hunts large insects, rodents, snails, fish, frogs, and songbirds.
